With growing global warming the wildfire crisis in Greece has reached alarming levels, with a surge in fire incidents during the past year. In 2023 alone, Greece has witnessed over 1,000 wildfires, affecting various regions including Attica, Peloponnese, and the island of Evia. The intensity and scale of these blazes have strained firefighting resources and stirred global concern.

The statistics surrounding Greece’s wildfires are staggering. More than 50,000 hectares of land have been consumed by flames, with a significant impact on agricultural areas and natural habitats. Over 1,500 homes have been destroyed, leaving families displaced and traumatized.

Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate their homes while some have lost their lives in the fires. The wildfires threaten Greece’s cultural heritage. Thousands of tourists were evacuated negatively impacting the local economies reliant upon tourism.
