A 7.6 Mw earthquake hit Japan on Monday, 1st January 2024 near the Noto Peninsula in the Ishikawa prefecture. The Wall Street Journal has reported that at least 62 people have been killed and 14 critically injured in Japan.
The authorities are busy in assessing the damage. Several buildings, roads and bridges have been damaged by the tremors. Almost 33,000 households remained without power in Ishikawa prefecture early on Tuesday morning in Japan.
The earthquake prompted tsunami warnings for the nine prefectures along the west coast of the country and neighbouring countries such as North and South Korea and Russian Sakhalin Island. More quakes are expected to come this week.
