Millions of people are facing persistent hunger in five African countries as continued El Nino-induced drought has caused failed crops across southern Africa. Lesotho, Zambia, Namibia, Malawi and Zimbabwe have declared the situation as ‘national disaster.’ Two more countries, Angola and Mozambique, are feared to join the unlucky group of five soon.
More than 27 million people rely on agriculture in this part of Africa and failed crops mean danger of hunger, even famine in worst case scenario. Food prices are constantly rising and people have to cut down their food and calories intake.
WFP has appealed for US$ 400 million to provide food, cash and other assistance to some six million people in the region.
